Quick Answer: Deducting Lunch Breaks from Work Shifts

Paid Hours = Gross Elapsed Shift Time − Unpaid Meal Period Duration.

For example, working 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM spans 9.00 elapsed hours (540 minutes). With a 30-minute unpaid lunch, payable time is 8.50 decimal hours (8 hours 30 minutes). With a 45-minute lunch, payable time is 8.25 decimal hours (8 hours 15 minutes). Short rest breaks under 20 minutes remain compensable work time under FLSA rules.

Understanding Meal Break Math

When calculating timesheets, unpaid meal breaks are subtracted directly from elapsed shift time:

Paid Working Minutes = (Shift End - Shift Start) - Unpaid Lunch Minutes

Notice: Short rest breaks (e.g. two 15-minute coffee breaks) are generally paid time and should not be deducted from your total work hours.

Frequently Asked Questions

Under U.S. federal FLSA regulations, genuine meal periods (usually 30 minutes or more) during which an employee is completely relieved from work duties are not considered work time and are not required to be paid.
