Quick Answer: Calculating Weekly Time Card Hours

Weekly Work Hours = Sum of Daily Paid Hours across all days in the pay period.

For each day, subtract clock-in from clock-out, deduct unpaid meal breaks, and convert remaining minutes to decimal hours (Minutes ÷ 60). Regular pay applies up to 40 hours under standard FLSA rules; hours above 40 are categorized as overtime (typically at 1.5× hourly rate).

How the Time Card Calculator Works

1

Enter Punch Times

Type your clock-in and clock-out times for each day. You can use standard 12-hour AM/PM (e.g., 8:00 AM) or 24-hour military notation (0800, 1700).

2

Deduct Unpaid Breaks

Enter your lunch or unpaid rest period in minutes (e.g., 30 for a half-hour meal). The engine automatically subtracts unpaid time from gross elapsed shift duration.

3

Review & Export

View your total worked hours in both HH:MM and decimal formats. Add an optional wage rate to estimate gross earnings, then print, copy, or download as a CSV timesheet.

Worked Example: Standard 5-Day Workweek

Suppose you work Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM with a 30-minute unpaid lunch break each day:

  • Total elapsed shift time: 9 hours (540 minutes).
  • Less unpaid break: 540 - 30 = 510 minutes = 8 hours and 30 minutes daily.
  • In decimal hours: 510 ÷ 60 = 8.50 decimal hours per day.
  • Weekly total (5 days): 8.50 × 5 = 42.50 total hours (42 hours, 30 minutes).
  • Regular hours: 40.00 hours.
  • Overtime hours: 2.50 hours.

If your hourly rate is $20.00 with standard 1.5x overtime ($30.00/hr), your regular pay is $800.00, your overtime pay is $75.00, and your estimated gross pay equals $875.00.

Calculation Methodology & Formulas

1. Shift Duration Formula

Worked Minutes = (Clock-Out Minutes - Clock-In Minutes) - Break Minutes

2. Overnight Shift (Cross-Midnight)

When Clock-Out is earlier in the day than Clock-In:

Elapsed Minutes = (1440 - Clock-In Minutes) + Clock-Out Minutes

3. Decimal Hours Conversion

Decimal Hours = Round((Worked Minutes ÷ 60), 2 decimal places)

Frequently Asked Questions

To calculate your total hours, subtract your clock-in time from your clock-out time for each day, then subtract any unpaid lunch breaks. Finally, convert remaining minutes to decimal hours (minutes divided by 60) and sum all working days across the pay period.
